MONROVIA — Senator Edwin Melvin Snowe, Jr., Liberia’s head of delegation to the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), has called on fellow member states to rally behind Liberia’s bid for a non-permanent seat on the United Nations Security Council.

The decisive vote is scheduled for June 3, and Snowe is urging ECOWAS members to offer strong support.

Addressing the ECOWAS Parliament plenary, Senator Snowe emphasized the importance of the regional bloc’s endorsement.

“I want us to please join Liberia in giving her your support. We need your support. We are appealing to ECOWAS. We know that Liberia is already a bloc vote to ECOWAS,” he declared.

Senator Snowe, a ranking member of ECOWAS, praised the organization for officially endorsing Liberia’s candidacy and made a passionate plea to the Parliament President to finalize outreach efforts among West African heads of state and government.

“Next week will be the vote. I want to ask you, Mr. President, to please make your final rounds in West Africa and to call on all our colleagues to please speak to your respective Foreign Ministers and Presidents,” Snowe urged.

Highlighting Liberia’s historic role at the UN, he reminded the assembly that Liberia is a founding member of the United Nations and previously held a Security Council seat in the 1960s, represented by the late Ambassador Angie Brooks Randall — the first female president of the UN General Assembly.

“This is another opportunity for Liberia to represent us at the Security Council,” he said.

In response, ECOWAS Commission President Dr. Omar Alieu Touray reaffirmed the bloc’s unwavering support for Liberia’s campaign.

“As you all know, we are all with Liberia. We will continue the support for Liberia. There is a need to stay with Liberia. We want to congratulate the government for the good work they are doing,” Dr. Touray remarked.

Senator Snowe also took the opportunity to express gratitude for ECOWAS’ role in stabilizing Liberia’s political landscape, noting the regional group’s involvement in resolving an impasse within Liberia’s House of Representatives.

He praised the successful intervention of two ECOWAS missions, which culminated in the election of Honorable Richard Nagbe Koon as Speaker following the resignation of the previous Speaker.

“After all of those missions, the Court was able to make a final determination and our matter has been resolved,” Snowe said, commending ECOWAS’ commitment to peace and stability in Liberia.

As the June 3 vote approaches, Senator Snowe’s impassioned appeals underscore Liberia’s commitment to securing its place on the global stage through the UN Security Council, backed by the solidarity of its regional partners in ECOWAS.
