LONDON – In a continued demonstration of responsible leadership and international cooperation, the Republic of Liberia has made its full annual contribution to the International Maritime Organization (IMO) for the year 2026.

This timely payment underscores Liberia’s steadfast commitment to the IMO’s mission of promoting safe, secure, and environmentally sound shipping practices worldwide.

The symbolic presentation of the contribution was made by Liberia’s Permanent Representative to the IMO, His Excellency Ambassador Robert Kpadeh, on behalf of the President of the Republic of Liberia, H.E. Joseph Nyumah Boakai Sr. Ambassador Kpadeh presented a ceremonial cheque to IMO Secretary-General H.E. Arsenio Dominguez at the organization’s headquarters in London, United Kingdom.

In his remarks, Ambassador Kpadeh extended warm greetings from President Boakai, the Liberia Maritime Authority, and the people of Liberia. He reaffirmed Liberia’s unwavering commitment to upholding its international obligations and supporting the IMO’s work in technical assistance, capacity building, and maritime governance.

“In the quest to advance international shipping to greater heights for the good of humanity, Liberia will continue to be a highly supportive and reliable Member State of the IMO,” said Ambassador Kpadeh.

He praised Secretary-General Dominguez for his exemplary leadership during times of rapid technological change and global challenges, adding that Liberia stands ready to collaborate closely with the IMO and its partners to promote innovation, safety, and sustainability in global shipping.

Liberia’s contribution of £5,527,138.00 (approximately US$7.4 million) is a strong signal of its role as a leading flag state and a Council Member in Category A—the highest level of representation within the IMO.

Liberia is currently the only African nation serving in this influential category, reinforcing its status as a beacon of maritime excellence on the continent.

This contribution also comes at a crucial time, as Liberia campaigns to retain its seat on the IMO Council for the 2026–2027 biennium.

The payment not only fulfills a financial obligation but sends a clear message to the international maritime community: Liberia is a dependable partner and an enduring force for progress within the global maritime system.

As a top-ranking flag registry, Liberia embraces its moral and professional responsibility to set a high standard in compliance, governance, and cooperation.

The nation remains firmly committed to working hand in hand with the IMO and its Member States in building a cleaner, safer, and more efficient maritime future.
