Supreme Court to Decide on Prohibition Petition by Ex-Weah Officials

By: Staff Writer

TEMPLE OF JUSTICE – The Supreme Court of Liberia is set to hear a landmark Prohibition petition filed by former Finance Minister Samuel Tweah and four other ex-officials from the previous administration of former President George Weah. The hearing is scheduled for Tuesday, July 1, at 11:00 AM.

The case stems from corruption allegations involving the misappropriation of billions of Liberian dollars and over half a million U.S. dollars.

Alongside Tweah, the petitioners include former Solicitor General Nyanti Tuan, Moses Cooper, Stanley Ford, and Jefferson Karmo—all of whom served in high-ranking government positions during the Weah administration.

During the February term of court, Chief Justice Sie-A-Nyene Yuoh appointed Judge Roosevelt Willie of Criminal Court ‘A’ to oversee the proceedings.

This appointment followed the recusal of Judge Blamo Dixon, who stepped down from the case.

In their petition, the former officials are seeking a writ of prohibition from the Supreme Court in an effort to halt ongoing legal proceedings.

They argue that their actions were carried out as part of sensitive national security operations under the authority of the National Security Council (NSC).

According to the defendants, prosecuting them could force the disclosure of classified national security information—an act they claim would violate the law establishing the NSC.

However, Judge Willie has previously ruled that the legal protections cited by the defendants do not exempt them from being held accountable before the court.

The upcoming Supreme Court hearing is expected to draw significant public and political attention, as it could set a major precedent in how Liberia handles allegations of corruption involving national security claims.
