By: Sylvester S Tamba, Jr

PAYNESVILLE – As part of its unwavering commitment to gender inclusion and digital empowerment, the West Africa ICT Action Network (WAICTANet) has hosted a special side event in celebration of International Girls in ICT Day 2025.

The event took place during the Monrovia Tech Summit (MTS 2025) on April 24 in Paynesville, Liberia.

The vibrant session gathered more than 100 girls and young women from local schools, communities, and youth organizations, providing them with mentorship, inspiration, and hands-on exposure to opportunities in the fields of ICT and STEM.

In his keynote remarks, Peterking Quaye, Director of Programs and Projects at WAICTANet, underscored the importance of investing in girls’ digital futures through ICT.

“When we invest in girls’ access to technology and digital education, we are not just changing their futures—we are transforming Liberia.”

He emphasized the need to extend the initiative beyond urban centers in order to impact girls in rural Liberia who are also in dying need of education opportunities.

“This year’s Girls in ICT Day is a clear call to action—to push beyond Monrovia and ensure rural and underserved communities are included in this digital revolution.”

Engaging Sessions and Practical Exposure

The side event featured, mentorship sessions led by accomplished women in tech, Interactive demos in coding, robotics, cybersecurity, and digital entrepreneurship, an open forum for girls to share their aspirations and innovative ideas

The event’s energy reflected WAICTANet’s ongoing work to expand digital literacy access for girls across Liberia.

Through initiatives such as Girls Code Clubs, Mobile ICT Labs, and Digital Bootcamps, the organization says it has impacted over 2,500 young women in counties like Montserrado, Margibi, and Grand Bassa – equipping them with essential digital skills to pursue careers in technology and innovation.

Madam Moore, a leading advocate at the event, shared said “we are building a Liberia where girls lead in innovation—not just consume it. Our goal is to ensure that every girl, no matter where she lives, has the confidence, skills, and support to thrive in the digital economy.”

A Theme That Reflects the Times

Under the theme, “Empowering Youth, Driving Innovation, and Shaping Liberia’s Future: The Artificial Intelligence Revolution Age,” the 2025 Girls in ICT Day was more than a slogan—it was a vision brought to life.

With real-world exposure, inspirational role models, and peer networking, the event reaffirmed a powerful truth that when girls are given the tools, they rise.

As Liberia continues its journey toward digital transformation, WAICTANet remains steadfast in its mission to promote inclusive, tech-driven initiatives and to advocate for national policies that empower girls and women in the digital space.
